Scouting Safety Checks

Providing Scouting in a safe manner without risk to health, so far as it is reasonably practicable

It is the policy of The Scout Association and Brighouse Scouts to provide Scouting in a safe manner without risk to health, so far as it is reasonably practicable.

It is the responsibility of all those involved in Scouting to seek, so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe manner without risk to the health of participants.

Use the Five Steps of Risk Assessment:

1. Look for the hazards, i.e. what could cause harm.

2. Consider who might be injured and how.

3. Decide whether the precautions in place are sufficient. If not, what further action needs to be taken?

4. Where appropriate, record your findings so that others are aware of the precautions to be taken.

5. Keep the precautions under review and revise them when you consider they are no longer effective.

Outdoor Games Check should include:

No tripping or slipping hazards uneven ground. No overhead hazards. Potentials for falls on solid or sharp objects and glass minimized. Game suitable for age and ability of participants. Equipment in good order. Boundaries and limits understood. Rules understood by all. No other hazards. Adequate supervision. First Aid Kit available.

Overnight Accommodation Check should include:

Correct adult ratios. Relevant Nights Away Permit holder. Safe access and egress. No tripping or slipping hazards. No fall hazards. Potentials for falls on solid or sharp objects and glass minimized. Any hazardous natural features in area. Cooking arrangements safe and hygienic. Heating arrangements including boilers safe. Visual inspection of electrics – no electrical hazards. Adequate ventilation. Sufficient supervision. Emergency phone available. No risk of fire. Smoke detectors [if fitted] working. Fire Exits known and unobstructed. First Aid Kit and first aider available. Location of nearest Accident Hospital. No other hazards. In Touch plan in place. DC notified via form NAN.

Premises and facilities used by Scouts should be subject to regular safety checks to ensure that they remain safe to use. These safety checks [Risk Assessments] should be recorded.

Outings and Trips Check should include:

First Aiders and Kit available on each vehicle (in case you get separated). Adequate supervision. Correct adult ratios. Mobile phone available. Safe area for embarking/ disembarking. Any Susceptibility to travel sickness identified prior to event.  Seat belts fitted and used. Routines established for regular monitoring. Location of nearest Accident Hospital No other hazards. In touch plan in place.

Camping Check should include:

No tripping or slipping hazards. No overhead hazards. Any hazardous natural features in area. · Potentials for falls on solid or sharp objects and glass minimized. Cooking arrangements safe. Equipment in good order. Including regular visual checks and test on gas equipment. Adequate supervision, Correct adult ratios. Emergency phone available. No naked lights in tents. No other hazards. First Aid Kit and First Aider available. Location of nearest Accident Hospital, InTouch plan in place, DC notified via form NAN.

Indoor Games Check should include:- Chairs and tables stored safely. No tripping or slipping hazards. No unguarded lights. Collisions unlikely. Potentials for falls on solid or sharp objects and glass minimized. Game suitable for age and ability of participants. Equipment in good order. Rules understood by all. No other hazards. Adequate supervision. First Aid Kit available.
